A quieter kind of yoga for busy bodies and minds

Many yoga classes focus on continuous movement, strength or physical intensity.

Yin Yoga is different.

Most of the class takes place on the floor, with your body supported by props. Instead of moving quickly between poses, you are invited to settle into each position gradually and remain there for a few minutes.

This slower pace gives you time to notice your body, soften unnecessary effort and breathe without rushing.

There are no headstands, fast sequences or pressure to keep up. Your teacher will help you adjust each posture to suit your body and find an appropriate level of sensation.

The aim is not to push further. It is to practise slowing down, listening to your body and allowing space for rest.

What happens in a Yin Yoga class?

When you arrive, you will be welcomed into a spacious, peaceful studio in central Wollongong.

Mats and supportive props, including bolsters, blocks and blankets, are available to help you feel comfortable.

Your teacher will guide you through a sequence of mostly seated or reclining postures. Each pose is adapted so that you can find a gentle, manageable stretch without forcing your body.

Poses are generally held for several minutes, with quiet transitions and time to rest between positions.

Throughout the class, you will be encouraged to:

  • breathe naturally
  • release unnecessary muscular effort
  • notice sensations without pushing into pain
  • use additional support whenever needed
  • adjust or leave a posture at any time
  • work within your own comfortable range

There is no competition and nothing to prove.
