Yoga in Wollongong
Most people come to yoga to fix something … a stiff back, a loud mind, a sense that something’s a little off. That’s a perfectly good reason to start. But here’s what tends to happen once you’re on the mat: the fixing quietly loosens its grip, and what’s left is something that was steady the whole time.
Our yoga is less about achieving a posture and more about listening … to what the body is carrying, to where the breath catches, to the stillness underneath the movement. You don’t need to be flexible. You don’t need to arrive already calm. You don’t need to believe anything in particular. You just need to turn up.
If that sounds different from yoga you’ve tried before, it probably is. Come and see … the practice speaks for itself.
What a class here is actually like.
No competition, no judgement, no one watching to check you’re doing it “right.” A teacher who explains what’s happening and offers an option for every body in the room. You’ll move, you’ll breathe, and you’ll usually finish lying still for a few minutes … the part most people are surprised to find they needed most.
Classes run for1 hour. Wear something you can move in, bring water, and if it’s your first time, arrive a few minutes early so we can say hello. Mats and props are here if you need them … just bring yourself.
You don’t need to be flexible (and other things worth knowing)
The two reasons people most often give for not starting … “I’m not flexible” and “I can’t switch my mind off” are quietly the two best reasons to begin. Flexibility is something yoga builds, not something it asks of you first. And a busy mind isn’t a problem to solve before you arrive; noticing it is where the practice actually starts.
If you’re over 45, easing back after an injury, or simply haven’t moved much in a while, you’re in good company … a lot of our community started in exactly that place.
Find the yoga class that fits
Not sure where to begin? Start with Beginners Yoga, Yin Yoga, Restorative Yoga, or book a private session if you would prefer individual guidance first.
Every yoga class at Wellness Centre Wollongong is taught in the same spirit: attention over achievement.
Beginners Yoga Course
We assume nothing … not flexibility, not fitness, and not previous yoga experience. You will learn foundational postures slowly, with time to understand what you are doing and why.
This class is ideal if you feel nervous about joining a group class, have never practiced yoga before, or want to build confidence before trying other styles.
Beginners Yoga helps you become familiar with basic shapes, breathing, props and class structure so that yoga begins to feel less mysterious and more natural.
Best for: complete beginners, returning students, low confidence, stiffness, learning foundations.
Hatha Vinyasa Yoga
Blending steady held postures with breath-guided flow. A grounded, beginner-friendly class for strength, flexibility, balance and calm.
A Hatha Vinyasa class gives you both steadiness and movement.
The Hatha aspect gives you time to pause, align, strengthen and listen. The Vinyasa aspect brings rhythm, flow, mobility and breath awareness.
Together, they create a balanced yoga practice that can support both body and mind.
You may leave feeling stronger and more open, but also quieter inside. You may notice that your breathing is easier, your posture feels more awake, or your mind feels less scattered than when you arrived.
Pre Natal Yoga & Pilates
Pre-Natal Yoga offers gentle movement, breathing and body awareness during pregnancy.
Classes are adapted to support your changing body and are designed to help you maintain mobility, ease tension, connect with your breath and feel more supported through pregnancy.
Pre-Natal Yoga can also be a valuable space to connect with others going through a similar season of life.
Best for: pregnancy, gentle movement, breath awareness, body support, connection.
Mums & Bubs
Mums and Bubs offers a combination of yoga & Pilates postnatal movement in a space where your baby is welcome.
There is no pressure to have everything under control. Babies feed, cry, sleep, wriggle and need attention — and that is all part of the class.
The focus is on rebuilding gently, reconnecting with your body, supporting posture and strength, and being around other parents who understand this stage of life.
Best for: postnatal recovery, gentle movement, connection, rebuilding strength, new parents.
Restorative Yoga
Restorative Yoga is the art of supported rest.
Using bolsters, blankets, blocks and other props, the body is placed in comfortable positions and held for several minutes. There is very little to do — and that is the point.
For people who are used to pushing, achieving or holding everything together, Restorative Yoga can feel surprisingly powerful. It gives the body permission to soften and the mind permission to stop trying so hard.
You do not need flexibility, fitness or yoga experience. You only need a willingness to be supported.
Best for: fatigue, stress, gentle recovery, deep relaxation, nervous system settling.
Yin Yoga + iRest Yoga Nidra
Yin Yoga is slow, quiet and deeply settling.
Postures are held for longer periods, usually with support from props, allowing the deeper layers of the body to soften over time. Rather than pushing, Yin Yoga asks you to pause, feel and allow.
When combined with iRest Yoga Nidra, the class becomes a powerful practice of deep rest. iRest is a guided meditation practice, usually done lying down, where you are gently led through body awareness, breath and inner listening.
This is a beautiful class if your nervous system feels overloaded, your body feels tight, or your week has left you feeling scattered.
Best for: stress, deep rest, tightness, nervous system support, busy minds, evening practice.
Face Yoga
A unique, gentle practice focusing on facial muscles, promoting relaxation and a natural, healthy glow.
Hatha Yoga
A traditional practice balancing strength and flexibility, offering a well-rounded, mindful experience.
Private Yoga
Private Yoga is one-to-one support built around you.
This may be the best place to begin if you have an injury, feel anxious about group classes, want individual attention, or need a quieter starting point.
A private session can help you understand the basics, learn modifications, build confidence and create a practice that respects your body.
It is also a helpful option if you have a specific goal, such as improving mobility, easing tension, supporting meditation, or developing a home yoga practice.
Best for: beginners, injuries, individual goals, low confidence, personalised support.
Yoga Mats, Bolsters & Props
Equipment is provided, mats, bolsters, blocks, & straps to support your practice comfortably and safely. Bring your own mat if you have one.

Common questions about yoga at Wellness Centre Wollongong
I have never done yoga. Which class should I start with?
Beginners Yoga is usually the best place to start. It moves slowly, assumes no experience and gives you time to learn the foundations. If you would rather begin privately, a one-to-one Private Yoga session can also be a gentle on-ramp.
Do I need to be flexible or fit?
No. Flexibility and strength are things yoga can gradually build. They are not required before you begin. Every posture has options, and you are always free to rest.
Is the yoga religious or spiritual?
No. Our classes are secular and grounded. You will not be asked to adopt a belief system. The focus is on movement, breath, attention, rest and body awareness.
I am over 45. Is yoga suitable for me?
Yes. Many people begin yoga later in life or return after many years away from movement. Beginners Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga can all be helpful starting points depending on your body and goals.
Can I do yoga if I have an injury?
It depends on the injury. Please tell your teacher before class so they can offer options. If you have a medical condition, recent surgery, significant pain or are unsure whether yoga is suitable, check with your doctor or health professional first. Private Yoga may be a better starting point if you need individual support.
Can I do yoga during pregnancy?
Pre-Natal Yoga is designed to support pregnancy with appropriate movement and breath awareness. Please speak with your teacher before class and follow any medical advice you have been given.
Begin where you are
You already have what you need to begin: a body, a breath and a little curiosity.
The rest, we will show you.
Whether you are brand new to yoga, returning after a break, or looking for a calmer way to move and settle your mind, you are welcome at Wellness Centre Wollongong.
