Start yoga with greater confidence

Beginning yoga in a regular class can sometimes feel intimidating. Other participants may already know the poses, the teacher may move quickly, and unfamiliar names or instructions can make it difficult to relax into the experience.

This four-week course is different.

We slow things down and explain the foundations step by step. You will have time to become familiar with the poses, ask questions, practise using yoga props and explore options that better suit your body.

The course combines traditional Hatha yoga with a simple, beginner-paced Vinyasa flow. You will experience both holding individual poses and moving gently between poses in time with your breathing.

The intention is not to force your body into a particular shape. It is to develop awareness, confidence and a more balanced relationship between effort and ease.

Flexibility is not a requirement. Come as you are and begin from where you are.

Is this beginner yoga course right for you?

This course may be a good place to start when:

  • you have never attended a yoga class before;
  • you feel stiff, tight or less mobile than you once were;
  • you do not consider yourself naturally flexible;
  • you find fast or highly athletic classes unappealing;
  • you would like instructions explained clearly and at a manageable pace;
  • you want to understand basic poses rather than simply copy the person beside you;
  • you are returning to yoga after a long break;
  • you want to improve your body awareness, balance and coordination;
  • you are interested in yoga for both physical and mental wellbeing;
  • you would like a supportive pathway into ongoing yoga classes.

The course is suitable for a wide range of adults, ages and body types. Options can be offered for many common restrictions, although not every exercise will be suitable for every person.

Please contact us before enrolling when you have a significant injury, recent surgery, a health condition affecting exercise, or uncertainty about whether the course is appropriate for you.

What you will learn over the four weeks

Foundational yoga poses

Learn a selection of basic standing, seated and floor-based yoga poses. Your teacher will explain how to enter, hold and leave each pose with greater awareness and control.

A simple Vinyasa flow

Practise a short sequence that links one movement to the next. The sequence will be introduced gradually so you can become familiar with the movements before bringing them together.

Moving with your breath

Explore how breathing can guide the pace of your movement and help you remain present. You will practise coordinating simple movements with inhalation and exhalation.

Alignment and safer movement

Learn basic alignment principles to help you practise with greater stability and awareness. Rather than trying to create a perfect pose, you will explore a version that is appropriate for your body.

Using blocks, straps and other props

Discover how yoga props can make a pose more accessible, comfortable or stable. Props are not a sign that you are doing less—they are practical tools that help the practice meet your body.

Balancing effort and ease

Learn when to engage, when to soften and how to use your breath as feedback. Yoga does not need to involve forcing, straining or competing.

Relaxation and stillness

Each class includes time to slow down and notice the effects of the practice. You will experience how yoga can feel both energising and settling.

A beginner-friendly blend of Hatha and Vinyasa yoga

Beginner Hatha Vinyasa Yoga classes in Wollongong

What is Hatha yoga?

In many Western yoga classes, Hatha describes a style in which individual poses are entered carefully and held for several breaths before moving to the next pose.

Holding a pose gives you time to notice your alignment, breathing and physical sensations. It can also help develop strength, stability, concentration and body awareness.

For a beginner, this slower approach provides valuable time to understand what you are doing and explore an appropriate version of each pose.

What is Vinyasa yoga?

Vinyasa means linking movement in a flowing sequence.

Rather than treating each pose as completely separate, a Vinyasa sequence moves from one position to another, often in coordination with the breath.

In this beginner course, the flow is kept simple and introduced progressively. The aim is not to move quickly or perform an athletic routine. It is to experience how breathing, attention and movement can come together as one connected practice.

Why combine the two approaches?

Hatha gives you time to learn and experience individual poses.

Gentle Vinyasa helps you explore transitions and connect those poses through movement and breath.

Together, they provide a balanced introduction to yoga that includes:

  • strength and stability;
  • flexibility and mobility;
  • balance and coordination;
  • breathing and concentration;
  • body awareness;
  • relaxation.

Your four-week beginner yoga journey

Week 1: Getting comfortable with the foundations

Your first class introduces the studio, basic yoga terminology and how to use common props.

You will explore:

  • comfortable breathing;
  • foundational standing and floor-based poses;
  • basic alignment and body awareness;
  • how to recognise unnecessary strain;
  • resting positions and relaxation.

The emphasis is on becoming comfortable with the environment and learning how to approach the practice without judgement.

Week 2: Linking breath and movement

In week two, you will begin coordinating simple movements with your breathing.

You will explore:

  • how the breath can guide your pace;
  • simple transitions between poses;
  • introductory elements of a Vinyasa sequence;
  • options for tightness or restricted movement;
  • maintaining steadiness without holding your breath.

Week 3: Strength, mobility and balance

Week three develops the foundations through a balanced practice.

You will explore:

  • standing poses;
  • balance and coordination;
  • gentle strength and stability;
  • mobility through comfortable ranges;
  • adapting a pose with blocks, straps or other support.

The aim is not to achieve the deepest version of a pose. It is to find a version in which you can remain steady, breathe and stay aware.

Week 4: Bringing your practice together

The final class brings the course elements into a complete beginner-friendly practice.

You will revisit:

  • foundational Hatha poses;
  • the simple Vinyasa flow;
  • movement coordinated with breath;
  • effort, ease and relaxation;
  • how to continue yoga after completing the course.

By the end of the four weeks, you should have a clearer understanding of what happens in a yoga class and greater confidence choosing an ongoing class that suits you.

More than just a physical workout

Yoga includes physical movement, but the practice is not only about stretching or achieving poses.

As you learn to coordinate movement, breathing and attention, you may begin to notice changes in how you experience the practice.

People commonly attend beginner yoga to support:

Flexibility and comfortable movement

A gradual yoga practice can encourage movement through a variety of ranges and help you become more aware of areas that feel restricted.

Strength and stability

Holding poses and moving with control can engage the legs, hips, upper body and trunk without requiring a high-impact workout.

Balance and coordination

Standing poses and controlled transitions give you opportunities to practise balance, spatial awareness and coordination.

Body awareness

Yoga encourages you to notice how you move, breathe and respond to different positions rather than practising on autopilot.

Concentration

Following the breath and remaining present with a pose can provide a useful focus for an otherwise busy mind.

Relaxation

The combination of mindful movement, breathing and rest may help you feel calmer and more settled at the end of class.

Results vary between individuals. Yoga should complement—not replace—appropriate medical care or professional health advice.

What to expect in your first class

Please arrive approximately 10–15 minutes early so you have time to check in, meet your teacher and settle into the studio.

At the beginning of class, your teacher will explain how the session will run and introduce the equipment you may use.

The class will generally include:

  1. settling and breath awareness;
  2. gentle preparatory movement;
  3. foundational yoga poses;
  4. a simple flowing sequence;
  5. floor-based poses or stretching;
  6. guided relaxation.

You are always welcome to pause or rest. Yoga is not a competition, and you do not need to copy the deepest version of a pose.

What to wear and bring

Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Specialist yoga clothing is not required.

Please bring:

  • a water bottle;
  • any essential medication you normally carry;
  • your own yoga mat, if you prefer using it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be flexible?

No. Flexibility is not a prerequisite for yoga. The course is an opportunity to explore movement from your present starting point. Props and alternative options can help make many poses more accessible.

The course is taught at a gradual, beginner-friendly pace. It includes held Hatha postures, a simple Vinyasa flow, standing poses, balance and relaxation.

It is gentler and more instructional than a typical open Vinyasa class, but it is not a purely restorative class. Some poses will involve moderate effort, strength and balance.

It depends on the nature of the injury or condition.

Please contact the Wellness Centre before booking so we can discuss the general requirements of the course. Your teacher may be able to offer alternative options, but a group yoga course cannot accommodate every condition.

Where appropriate, seek clearance from your doctor, physiotherapist or other treating health professional before participating.

Because each week builds on the previous class, attending all four sessions is recommended. Missed course sessions are not normally refundable or transferable. Please contact us if an unexpected circumstance prevents you from attending.

Begin your yoga practice in a supportive environment

You do not need to be flexible, experienced or naturally coordinated to begin yoga.

You simply need a willingness to start.
