Introduction – More Than Just Exercise

When you step into a Pilates class at The Wellness Centre Wollongong, you’re not just joining a workout. You’re taking part in a movement that began nearly a century ago, created by a man whose life was as fascinating as the method itself.

Joseph Pilates didn’t just invent a new form of exercise—he created a system for total body conditioning, mental focus, and whole-person wellbeing.

For our new clients, especially those curious about where Pilates comes from and why we teach it the way we do, this is your guided introduction.

“Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.”Joseph Pilates

The Man Behind the Method

Joseph Hubertus Pilates was born in 1883 Germany, to a father who was a gymnast and a mother who was a naturopath.

From a young age, Joseph was determined to overcome his own physical challenges—he suffered from asthma, rickets, and rheumatic fever. Rather than resigning himself to poor health, he immersed himself in studying:

  • Human anatomy
  • Physical culture
  • Yoga
  • Gymnastics
  • Martial arts
  • Animal movement patterns

By his teenage years, Joseph was modeling for anatomy charts and excelling in sports including skiing, diving, and boxing. His journey from frailty to robust health became the foundation for the method that would later bear his name.

War, Innovation, and the Birth of Contrology

During World War I, Joseph was interned in a camp for German nationals in England. There, he refined his exercises, teaching them to fellow internees and working as an orderly in a hospital.

Using springs attached to hospital beds, he created resistance-based rehabilitation exercises for bed-bound patients—precursors to today’s Pilates Reformer and Cadillac equipment.

Joseph called his system Contrology, defining it as “the complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit.”

After the war, he emigrated to the United States, where he opened a New York studio in 1926 with his wife Clara. Their studio attracted dancers, actors, athletes, and everyday people seeking better movement, strength, and vitality.

The Six Traditional Pilates Principles

While Joseph himself didn’t formalise them into “six principles,” these core ideas have been distilled from his teachings and writings.

At The Wellness Centre Wollongong, we adhere to these traditional principles as closely as possible—integrating current best-practice movement research.

1. Concentration

“It is the mind itself which builds the body.” – Joseph Pilates Pilates is about quality over quantity. Each movement is performed with full attention, engaging the mind to control the body. In our classes: We encourage you to focus on the exact movement, your breathing, and how your body feels, rather than rushing through repetitions.

2. Control

Originally named Contrology, Joseph’s method was built on the premise that every movement should be purposeful and precise, avoiding sloppy or uncontrolled motions. In our classes: Instructors guide you through controlled transitions and carefully measured movements that strengthen stabilising muscles and reduce injury risk.

3. Centering

3. Centering Often referred to as working from your powerhouse, centering involves initiating all movements from the core muscles—abdomen, lower back, hips, and buttocks. In our classes: You’ll learn how to engage your deep core muscles for stability and support, enhancing both strength and posture.

4. Flow

Pilates exercises are designed to move smoothly from one to the next, creating a fluid, almost dance-like quality. In our classes: We link movements so they flow seamlessly, encouraging grace, efficiency, and coordination.

5. Precision

“A few well-designed movements, properly performed in a balanced sequence, are worth hours of doing sloppy calisthenics.” – Joseph Pilates Precision ensures correct muscle engagement and postural alignment. In our classes: We break down exercises so you can master exact form before progressing.

6. Breath

Joseph believed proper breathing oxygenates the blood and invigorates the body. He instructed students to coordinate breath with movement, often exhaling fully to engage the deep core. In our classes: We use breathing patterns that support movement, improve core engagement, and enhance focus.

Joseph Pilates’ Enduring Influence

Joseph Pilates passed away in 1967 at the age of 83, but his method has spread worldwide.

While contemporary variations exist, the essence of Pilates remains rooted in the principles he taught.

“In 10 sessions you’ll feel the difference, in 20 you’ll see the difference, and in 30 you’ll have a whole new body.” – Joseph Pilates

While results vary, this captures the transformative potential of mindful practice.
