Rest deeply. Calm your nervous system. Learn to meet life with more ease.

iRest® Yoga Nidra Meditation is a simple, guided meditation practice that helps you slow down, rest deeply, and reconnect with the calm that is already present within you.

You do not need to be flexible. You do not need to sit cross-legged. You do not need to empty your mind.

In our iRest Meditation classes at Wellness Centre Wollongong, you are invited to lie down or sit comfortably, supported by bolsters, blankets and pillows, while your teacher gently guides you through a relaxing, step-by-step meditation practice.

Perfect for beginners, busy minds, tired bodies, and anyone wanting a calmer way to respond to life.

iRest® Meditation Wollongong: Guided Deep Rest for Beginners

New to meditation? You are very welcome here.

Many people feel unsure about meditation because they think they have to “stop thinking” or “do it properly.”

iRest is different.

Rather than trying to control your mind, iRest gently guides you into a state of deep rest where thoughts, emotions and body sensations can be noticed without judgment. You are supported to feel safe, comfortable and present, exactly as you are.

In each class, you can simply listen, rest and follow the guidance at your own pace.

What is iRest Yoga Nidra Meditation?

iRest® is a modern, evidence-informed form of Yoga Nidra meditation developed by Dr Richard Miller. It combines ancient meditation teachings with insights from modern psychology and neuroscience.

The practice usually includes:

  • settling the body and breath
  • creating a sense of inner safety and ease
  • gently sensing the body
  • noticing thoughts and emotions without needing to fix them
  • resting in open, spacious awareness
  • reconnecting with a deeper sense of peace, wholeness and wellbeing

At its heart, iRest is not about becoming someone different. It is about recognising the quiet steadiness, presence and wholeness that is already here beneath the busyness of life.

Why iRest is different from other types of meditation

Many meditation styles ask you to sit upright, focus on the breath, repeat a mantra, or concentrate for long periods.

iRest is more accessible for many beginners because it is:

1. Fully guided

You are guided step-by-step by a trained teacher, so you are not left wondering what to do next.

2. Rest-based

You can lie down comfortably with blankets, bolsters and support. This makes it especially welcoming if sitting meditation feels uncomfortable.

3. Body-aware

Instead of staying only in the mind, iRest gently brings awareness into the body, breath and felt sense of the present moment.

4. Welcoming, not forceful

You are not asked to push thoughts away or make yourself feel calm. iRest teaches a softer way of meeting your experience.

5. Non-dual in its deeper teaching

iRest points toward the understanding that peace is not something outside you that you have to chase. Peace, awareness and wholeness are already present, even when life feels busy, uncertain or difficult.

6. Practical for everyday life

The skills you learn in class can be used during daily stress, before sleep, during emotional overwhelm, or anytime you need to pause and come back to yourself.

What happens in an iRest Meditation class?

Each class is gentle, quiet and beginner-friendly.

You will usually begin with simple breath awareness or light settling practices to help the body unwind. You will then be invited to get comfortable on a mat, with the option of using bolsters, blankets and pillows for support.

Your teacher will guide you through an iRest Yoga Nidra Meditation practice. You may experience deep rest, body awareness, emotional settling, spaciousness, or simply a quiet pause from the demands of daily life.

There is nothing to perform and no “right” experience to have.

Some people feel deeply relaxed. Some notice how tired they are. Some drift in and out of awareness. Some simply enjoy being still. All of this is welcome.

iRest may be helpful if you are:

  • new to meditation and unsure where to start
  • feeling stressed, tired or mentally overloaded
  • wanting support for relaxation and sleep routines
  • looking for a gentle, non-physical wellness class
  • interested in mindfulness but find sitting still difficult
  • wanting to respond to life with more calm and clarity
  • drawn to deeper self-inquiry and non-dual meditation
  • seeking a welcoming in-person meditation class in Wollongong

iRest Meditation is a wellbeing practice. It is not a replacement for medical, psychological or psychiatric care.

The deeper invitation: from reacting to responding

Modern life can keep us in a constant cycle of reacting — to stress, pressure, uncertainty, emotions, responsibilities and the needs of others.

iRest offers a different pathway.

Through guided rest and awareness, you begin to notice what is happening inside you before reacting automatically. Over time, this can support a more spacious, steady and compassionate way of meeting life.

Rather than trying to control everything around you, iRest helps you change how you relate to what arises.

This is where the practice becomes more than relaxation. It becomes a way of remembering that beneath the changing thoughts, feelings and circumstances of life, there is a quiet ground of presence already here.
