So what is it? How does it work? (read on)
Aromatherapy in skin care
It wasn't until Marguerite Maury, a surgeon's assistant and nurse who was studying the healing properties of essential oils, turned her attention to the cosmetic properties of essential oils that the link between aromatherapy and the beauty industry was forged.
It was she who laid down the fundamental principles of what we know as aromatherapy today. She emphasized the importance of diluting the oils with a carrier oil and applying topically to the skin.
'The aromatherapy involved in cosmetology can lead to the most extraordinary of results.'
Madame Marguerite Maury (1895-1968)
Chairman of Pour le Comité International D'Esthétique et de Cosmétologie
How does it work?
When you smell a rose, brush past lavender, or crush an herb the scent you take in is the essential oil of the plant. It is found in the flowers, leaves, fruit, the root systems and the bark of green plants. These oils are extracted from the plants with specialist equipment and are protected from light and heat to maintain their precious properties in brown or blue bottles.
The healing properties of these oils are vast - from antiviral, anti inflammatory to calming, sleep inducing and uplifting. They are used in the beauty industry for their humectant and soothing properties. They calm and balance sebum (the natural skin oil produced by sebaceous glands) levels of the skin, are antiseptic and reduce bacteria. Best of all for us ladies is that many oils are cytophylactic which means they stimulate the generation of new cells thus preserving the health and beauty of the skin! Hurray!!
As different oils have different properties it is essential (no pun intended) to know your oils and use them for specific purpose. For example, if you had dry, sensitive skin you could use chamomile or rose to soothe and calm combined with geranium or palmarosa to balance and a rich hydrating carrier oil such as jojoba or evening primrose to give you a cream that hydrates, soothes, protects and balances without harsh or synthetic chemicals.
Oily skin often harbours more bacteria so anti bacterials oils like cedarwood or lavender together with juniper or bergamot to reduce sebum production in a light oil like almond would be beneficial for this type of skin.
Aromatherapy Massage is a potent way to get the Essential oils into the bloodstream and is a great way to change your mood. Use lemongrass, geranium to lift your spirits and lavender neroli to calm and soothe.
During exam times use rosemary and juniper for memory and learning.
